The room itself is
almost 1000 square feet and extends into the old rafters of the building
where acclimatising timber is also accommodated. Particular attention
during the renovations was given to climate control and insulation (heat
and sound) throughout the building, but given the massive volume of this
room, it was particularly critical here. The roof is lined with the
latest foiled insulation material (as used by NASA), the floor with
200mm of special sound isolating Rock Wool and the new windows with 30mm
double glazing utilizing Pilkington K glass for maximum heat retention
in winter and heat reflection during Summer! Heating throughout the Mill is
via wood burning stoves that accept everything from sawdust to logs and
anything in between. In the bench room we have the largest that pumps
out a massive 24KW when on full blast – enough for the coldest of
winters. The room has been
planned to comfortably accommodate just 4 furniture designer/makers with
each bench position under a window and provided with its own independent
lighting and plenty of power sockets. There is a double
drainer/sink wet area at one end and mobile assembly benches of 2.5m and
1.5m are also provided.
